The Media

Posted by Fefe

I don’t get the media, I rarely ever do.

Well actually, that’s quite a tall tale I’m telling there, I understand that they want as many eyes to fall on their news as possible in order to make as much profit as it is deemed possible, but they’re so regularly contradictory about what they want. Science can be forgiven for being contradictory sometimes due to experimentation, error propagation and what not.

The media becomes most self-contradictory of the issue of the economy, particularly relating to inflation and the housing market, and it’s starting to grate on me, if that makes any sense to you.

Let’s compare, I remember a couple of years ago, the media were crying because house prices were rising (partly thanks, by my own observations, to all those house selling shows that gave tips on how you can inflate the value of your house just by keeping up with the modern house decorating style) and that people had to take out mortgages that cost 4 times their income just to buy a house, which was pricing first-time buyers out of the market and off the ladder.

Now the houses are falling in prices, and yet again, the media decide to ignore the fact that houses are returning to decent prices again (good news for those first time buyers) because some people now have negative equity, as if they weren’t aware of such a risk. Houses can’t keep rising in price, because people’s wages don’t rise at the same rate.

But my irk isn’t with house prices now, it’s with the inflation/deflation. Being a university student, my weekly national news summary comes from my current favourite political satire show, Have I Got News For You, where it was revealed that some papers are going crazy because things are going back down in price, particularly food and fuel.

Somehow, the papers have managed to report this as a bad thing.

WHHHHHHYYYY?
